Cathodic Protection & Magnesium Power

Magnesium has a high position in the electrochemical series and is therefore used in applications which utilise this physical characteristic, for example, in the field of cathodic protection and the application of seawater batteries.

Cathodic Protection & Magnesium Power

Magnesium anodes are used to cathodically protect steel structures from corrosion. Metal surfaces will corrode when immersed in conductive mediums such as water, soil, sand and mud. Galvanic cells are set up and a current flows from the more reactive areas (anode) to less reactive areas (cathode). As a result dissolution will occur at the anode causing pitting. Magnesium is anodic to most metals and is therefore a good choice for sacrificial anodes. By attaching a magnesium anode, corrosive activity is transferred away from the structure to be protected, resulting in the dissolution of the anode over a given period of time.

Cathodic Protection & Magnesium Power

Magnesium Elektron's team of metallurgists and process engineers have worked together with cathodic protection specialists Cumberland Cathodic Protection Ltd to develop the ELEKTRON® MODULAR high performance anode.

The anode is unique in its design in that it is made up from a series of segments, each one having a specially formulated metallurgical structure to ensure the electrochemical performance is the same across the whole anode.  This enables the anode to be consumed in a controlled manner, delivering consistent performance year after year.

With its unique design and specially formulated metallurgical structure, companies can now specify the 5 tonne ELEKTRON® MODULAR anode, enabling the full potential of magnesium to be realised.

Cathodic Protection & Magnesium Power

A range of magnesium alloys have been developed for the production of electrodes in cells which use sea water as an electrolyte. These batteries can be used to power emergency life jacket lights, and low power electrical units as used in Sonabuoys. Motorised marine units such as torpedoes may be powered by high energy magnesium/silver seawater batteries. Magnesium Elektron produce a range of alloys to meet all applications. These include the traditional commercial materials AZ31 and AZ61 as well as the high power speciality alloys developed by Magnesium Elektron such as MELMAG®AP65, MELMAG®75 and MELMAG®AT61.
